It is hard for me to believe that the 2008-2009 school year is quickly coming to a close. It really is true that “Time flies when you are having fun!”
...And what fun we have had this year! We have enjoyed many learning experiences, as well as spirit-building activities. I am sure your child can remind you of some of these events: “Grow in the Grace and Knowledge of Jesus,” classroom plants, daily facts and Saints for the day over the PA, Pizza days, soccer games, COSI assembly, band lessons, Learning Journals, the gas leak, football games, “Operation Keepsake,” Saint Francis of Assisi pet pictures, the Living Rosary, Red Ribbon Week, Catholic Math League competition, Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival, Pint Sized Heroes Program, picture day, dressing up for Halloween, PTO Fall Festival, voting for the President, visits from the Cleveland Museum of Art, “mix-it up” lunch day, “Hats On” day, Scholastic Book Fair, Advent prayer services, Advent Retreat Day, Christmas Pageant, Christmas Concert, Operation Christmas Child, dress down days, Pep Rallies, Faith Families, Catholic Schools Week, Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Bingo, Hoops for Heart, basketball games, National Junior Honor Society, National Elementary Honor Society, snow day, “cold” day, Stations of the Cross, Lenten Retreat Day, Student Council, field trips, Power of the Pen, May Crowning, Right to Read Week, Rocking and Reading in the main hallway, the Art Show, Cosmic bowling, jump rope talent show, Young Audiences presentation, learning numbers, learning letters and sounds, learning how to read, learning math, social studies, English, science, religion, and a host of other memorable activities! ...and we aren’t finished yet! Library News
Please encourage your children to return their books! We have hundreds of dollars of books that have not been returned. Reminders for overdue books were sent home last week. Our library is Volunteer-run. Volunteers are needed for next year. The 4th grade students of the SAS Enrichment Program are hosting an ice cream bonanza to benefit our school. Join us for an end-of-the- year treat that’s sweet for the school--20% of all pre-tax retail sales will be donated to the SAS Academic Competition Fund! (The Academic Competition Fund was started to underwrite entry fees for SAS students/teams participating in academic competitions.)

Join us on Sunday, May 31st, from 5-9 PM at the Ben & Jerry's at Fairmount Circle. Celebrity scoopers include Ms. Cosgriff from 5-6 PM; Miss Nicoletti from 6-7 PM; Mrs. Monahan from 7-8 PM; and our newly-elected Student Council president, Dominic Gideon, from 8-9 PM.

A “Flowery” THANK YOU!
I just want to say many thanks to the Saint Ann School children who donated money to buy flowers for the church and rectory outdoor flower pots in memory of my mother, Elizabeth Ann Singler. The blue, purple, and white flowers you put together are gorgeous and the volunteers who did the planting this week did an exceptional job. Thank you so much for thinking about me at this time. Saint Ann Sports Banquet
The 4:00 PM Mass on Saturday, May 30th, will be an opportunity for all Saint Ann Athletes and Coaches to reflect on the successes of this year’s teams. Immediately following will be the award ceremony and dinner in Walsh Hall.

Family Movie Night
What a huge success! It was a perfect evening to enjoy the movie Hotel for Dogs, as well as some refreshments, on the lawn of Saint Ann School. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped out, including Alan Applegate, Todd Argust, Garth Beckles, Amy Fischer, Jackie Fox, Steve and Jeanne Gordon, Andy and Erin Kostos, Ed and Lori Lampman, Laura McMahon, Carlita Skok, Ellen Thompson, Kelly Toppin, and the Junior High students. Extra special thanks goes to Erin and Phil Owen for use of their projector and popcorn, hot pretzel, and hot dog machines, as well as for their tireless work at the event. We look forward to having more Family Movie Nights in the future!

Principal’s Pen
Memorial Day. How many of us look forward to this day as the “unofficial” beginning of the summer picnic season? Do we forget the real reason behind this holiday?
Looking back through our family trees, I am sure each of us can count our relatives among the men and women who have fought for our right to live freely in America. My grandfather served in WWI, and my father is a veteran of WWII. Dad has a tendency to tell his “war stories” to anyone and everyone who will listen. My siblings and I have heard them more times than we care to remember, and tend to tease Dad when he starts to reminisce. Too often we forget to tell him how proud we are of him and the bravery he showed during a terrible time in history.
My dad and his stories are not unique. Each one of us is living a better life today because of the courage and efforts of our ancestors. Hopefully we will take time this weekend to remember those who have gone before us, thank those we are blessed to still have in our lives, and continue to pray for peace.

FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT!
Bring a blanket and chairs to the parking lot of Saint Ann School on Friday, May 22, 2009 to watch Hotel for Dogs with fellow Saint Ann families. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. with bubbles, sidewalk chalk, and jump ropes, followed by the movie at dusk. Additionally, Steve Warshawsky (Manager of Ganley Automotive and parent of second grader Elle Warshawsky) will be offering test drives of the Volkswagon Routan. Saint Ann School will receive cash from Ganley for every person that takes a test drive. Admission and beverages (lemonade and water) are FREE. Hot dogs and popcorn will be available for $1! Flower Donation
Donations, in memory of Mrs. Betty Ann Singler, are still being accepted. We hope to purchase the plants over Memorial Day Weekend. Please send donations to school in an envelope marked “In memory of Mrs. Singler.”

Paying It Forward
WOW! We didn't think we'd receive so many pennies in just one week, and we are both overwhelmed and grateful! As we start the second week of our penny drive, we've now raised our expectations. If we, as a school community, can collect 44, 400 pennies ($444.00), we'll be able to sponsor one of the children from the Wellington Orphanage in Sierra Leone, Africa, for one year! Keep sending in those pennies--they are making a monumental difference.

Also, the students of the 5/6 Enrichment Class have been making the rounds to each of the eighteen classrooms, collecting student signatures for letters to be sent to Representative Marcia Fudge, Senator Sherrod Brown, and Senator George Voinovich. These letters request our lawmakers to commit to making "change" themselves in the form of increased aid to Third World countries. We've even included a penny in the letters for our lawmakers to remember us and our commitment to global peace and prosperity.

Please keep the momentum going strong--small change can make a big difference! The penny drive runs until Friday, May 29th.

Field Day
Our annual field day is being held on Thursday, May 28th! Our theme this year is A Day at the Races.

We are changing it up a little this year, instead of the students competing in their homerooms, they will be participating in their faith families. Each faith family is assigned a color to wear. Please make sure that your child wears a hat, a shirt, shorts, etc. that are mostly the color of their team.

Also, remember that a hot dog lunch will be provided for the students. Thank you PTO!

We are in need of a few tricycles for an event that day. If you have a trike that you would allow us to borrow, please bring it to Mrs. Trem (5B) before Wednesday.

Parents who are able to help us out that day (including during the faculty-student kick-ball game) are encouraged to do so!

Several Saint Ann student athletes represented their school this year on the Gesu track team. Participants from 4th to 8th grade ran, jumped, and threw their way to a great season. Blessed Mother Mary, during this month dedicated to you, may we always recall that you show us the motherly love of God. When we see the image of you and your Son, Madonna and Child, may we remember that this is also an image of God’s love for us. Pray for us, that we may know that God loves each one of us with a love that is even far greater than the love of a mother for her child. Thank you to our 3rd graders who led us in prayer during Monday’s May Crowning. What a beautiful prayer service.

“Rock and Read” is a fun activity that the Student Activities Committee has added to Right to Read Week. A rocking chair is strategically placed in the main hallway and has been occupied all week by avid readers: students, teachers, staff members, and parents.

We also enjoyed an inspiring presentation by the author of Milo with a Halo. Lisa Umina writes children’s books with a faith message.

ART NEWS
Our Annual Art Show was held last Sunday, May 10th. Attendees were treated to the presentation of close to 1,000 pieces of art, created by students in Kindergarten through Grade 8. Congratulations to art teacher Ms. Lick who brings out the artist in each of our students, while teaching them art appreciation and techniques.

The 2nd grade is scheduled for an Art To Go presentation given by the Cleveland Museum on May 19th. The topic is “Masks from Around the World.” This program is funded by the Alyssa J. Vanni Memorial Art Fund. We continue to keep Alyssa’s memory in our thoughts, and our prayers with Mr. Vanni. He has expressed thanks to everyone in the school community for their continued support.

JUMP ROPE TALENT SHOW
Saint Ann School students, staff, parents, and guests were treated to quite a show during our annual Jump Rope Talent Show last Friday. Students in Kindergarten – Grade 8, as well 4 staff members, participated in this entertaining assembly. Thank you to Mrs. Dindia, who prepared students and organized the event!

PTO Tag Sale
Clean out your closets and help our PTO! The famous tag sale is scheduled for this weekend, Friday, May 15th, and Saturday, May 16th. We are accepting all household, clothing, and toy donations. You can quickly drop your goods off in Walsh Hall during After Care hours. We are looking for volunteers to help in the following ways:
• Thursday, May 14: Sale set up, starting at 7 PM in Walsh Hall. Come for a short time or a long time...there is plenty of work to sort through everything and set it out!
• Friday, May 15: AM sale shift
• Friday, May 15: afternoon shift (ending at 3:00, after pick up)
• Saturday, May 16: AM sale shift
• Saturday, May 16: Noon-1:00 PM. Pack up unsold items, break down the sale and move items to Christ the King. WE NEED A LOT OF HELP FOR THIS PART!

A Penny for Our Thoughts
A penny isn't much in the US, but for children around the world, it can change a life. For their final project of the year, the 5/6 Enrichment Class will be conducting a school-wide penny drive to support Revive Africa, an organization striving to help the children of the Wellington Orphanage in Sierra Leone, Africa. This fundraiser culminates a unit of learning about global peace, UNICEF's Declaration of the Rights of Children, and how children can help make a difference in the lives of other children around the world. Please send your children to school with as many pennies as you can spare. Small change can make a big difference! The penny drive runs from May 18th- May 29th.

SPIRITWEAR!
If anyone has any last minute Spirit Wear they need before summer, we will be placing one more order before school ends. It will be on the items that were available last fall. We will be doing a Spirit Wear kick off right as school starts next year with lots of new items. If you are interested in ordering anything now please contact Lisa Waldeck at 932-1138 before Friday May 22nd. Thank you.

Attention 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders!  Saint Ann PTO presents the Second Annual (Almost) End of the School Year Cosmic Bowl-a-Palooza for our current and prospective Junior High students. Please join us at Solon Freeway Lanes on Saturday, May 16th from 7:00-9:00 PM for bowling, music, and snacks. The cost is $17 and includes two hours of bowling, music, shoes and snacks.

Saint Ann School Baseball Champs!
Congratulations to the 7th grade Junior Varsity Baseball Team, for winning the Eastside City Championship! The Sabers won the Championship with the best record on the Eastside – undefeated! On Saturday, the boys set up a win for the championship in a match-up against a 6-1 John-Paul II Academy. Solid pitching and hitting, with a shut-out of 15-0, led the team to victory. Last night in a stormy match-up against Gesu, the team was leading 10-1 in the top of the fourth inning before rain called the game. Victory was celebrated in true Saber spirit with a wet and muddy victory celebration. Fans Peter Hansen and Noah Scalish traveled with the team to cheer them on to victory.

The boys on the team have been playing together every year since kindergarten - during the summer on the city recreation league, CYO since 4th grade, and for the past two summers on a GLBL travel team. The heart of this win is not attributed to any one player, but rather a true team competitive enthusiasm for the game, a unique respect for each other, and a natural flow between players that is found on and off the field.

Coaches, Dave Brower, Steve Toth and Pat McNamara are to be congratulated for their time and dedication to making this win possible. Special thanks to the team’s loyal scorekeeper Mr. “Poppy” Gideon.

Overall the team has a 19-3 record in the past three seasons, making them a strong contender for next year’s city championship.

Team Players: Joshua Brower, Dominic Gideon, Luke Hackman, Nate Iott, Michael Kowalski, Ben Lamb, Aidan Martin, William Murphy, Hugh O’Neil, Jacob Rossi, and Kal Toth.

Principal’s Pen
Congratulations to our second graders who received their 1st Communion on Sunday. Saint Ann Parish welcomed 40 students for the reception of this Sacrament. Thank you to those who helped to prepare our students!

OCSAA
The Ohio Catholic School Accrediting Association recently sent me a letter granting Saint Ann School Full Acceptance on our recently submitted Progress Report. Reports detailing our progress on our School Improvement Plan are submitted every two years.

Because this was our second Progress Report in the cycle, it is time to begin another self-study and create a new School Improvement Plan. This process begins next week when I attend an OCSAA meeting and submit the initial paperwork to begin this two-year process.

During the 2009-2010 school year, we will be surveying our stakeholders (students, parents, and staff), reviewing test data trends, and examining demographic data. The self-study report must be completed by next May.

During the 2010-2011 school year, new academic and Catholicity goals will be written, an Internal Validation (a visit from the Assistant Superintendent to review documentation) will take place, and the process will culminate with a two-day visit by the External Validation Team who will review our School Improvement Plan. It is a very exciting, but daunting process. You will be kept informed as we progress through the process.

The Results are In…
ITBS/CogAT scores are being sent home today. Please check your child’s book bag for these results. School results will be reported in the Saber Scoop within the next few weeks.

H1N1 Flu
There has been a lot of news coverage regarding the recent outbreak of flu. Our nurse, Barb Kikel, has been in touch with the health department and has reminded students of methods of prevention: WASHING HANDS and COVERING COUGHS/SNEEZES. Even though the concern seems to be lessening, we still must be vigilant. Please remind your children of safety measures!

ART NEWS
Our Annual Art Show is this Sunday, May 10th from 12:30-2:00 PM in Walsh Hall. We have close to 1,000 pieces this year, and every student in Kindergarten through Grade 8 is represented. Hope to see you there! For those unable to attend the opening reception, the art show will be on display during school hours on Monday, May 11th.

Also, the 2nd grade is scheduled for an Art To Go presentation given by the Cleveland Museum on May 19th. The topic is “Masks from Around the World.” This program is funded by the Alyssa J. Vanni Memorial Art Fund. We continue to keep Alyssa’s memory in our thoughts, and our prayers with Mr. Vanni. He has expressed thanks to everyone in the school community for their continued support.

The artwork of Jacob Rossi and Megan Secard will be featured on WKYC (Channel 3) news on Sunday, May 10th, as they promote our Art Show. After the show, the art will be posted on the weekend morning show blog. View it by visiting www.wkyc.com and click on “life” then “blogs.”

PTO Tag Sale
Clean out your closets and help our PTO! The famous tag sale is scheduled for Friday, May 15th, and Saturday, May 16th. We are accepting all household, clothing, and toy donations. You can quickly drop your goods off in Walsh Hall during After Care hours. We are looking for volunteers to help in the following ways:
• Thursday, May 14: Sale set up, starting at 7 PM in Walsh Hall. Come for a short time or a long time...there is plenty of work to sort through everything and set it out!
• Friday, May 15: AM sale shift
• Friday, May 15: afternoon shift (ending at 3:00, after pick up)
• Saturday, May 16: AM sale shift

Swoosh Camp 2009
In-person registration will be held at Saint Ann School on May 8th from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the gym. Additional forms are located in the school office. Malley’s Sale Update
The final numbers are in from the Malley’s Sale. Saint Ann School students sold:

Our profit was: $2,992.20 (33% of the sales). The Cedar Point tickets will be sent to the school no later than Memorial Day.

JUMP ROPE TALENT SHOW
Saint Ann School students have been working on many jump rope skills. To showcase their hard work, a Jump Rope Talent Show has been planned for Friday, May 8th, at 1:00 PM, in the gym, for students in Kindergarten – Grade 8. Please see the notice elsewhere on Edline for more information.

PTO School Supplies Program
After a successful launch last spring, the Saint Ann PTO is once again offering a voluntary school supplies program through Innisbrook for the 2009-2010 school year, allowing families to purchase school supply packs for each grade at a great cost. No more driving around from store to store—just one stop shopping! PTO will receive a 5% rebate for all purchases, so you will save time and money in addition to supporting the PTO programs for our school. Order forms are in today’s mail. Attention 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders!  Saint Ann PTO presents the Second Annual (Almost) End of the School Year Cosmic Bowl-a-Palooza for our current and prospective Junior High students. Hanging Baskets

Library News
The last week for library will be the week of May 18th -- Tuesday the 19th and Thursday the 21st will be the last days. Please encourage your children to return their books! We have hundreds of dollars of books that have not been returned. Reminders for overdue books are being sent home this week.

8th Grade Algebra I
Our 8th grade Algebra I class has been doing some pretty amazing things recently that deserve some attention! First, they completed the curriculum for Algebra I and started working on Algebra II and Trigonometry topics. They are doing these topics as independent studies while doing some Algebra II topics together as a class. The first packet is being displayed in the junior high hallway – Logarithms. Please come take a look; it is pretty awesome. Second, this class has worked extremely hard to develop a Wiki for the class. As part of their final project, they worked with partners to create an interactive webpage for a unit we previously covered. This Wiki can be found at http://szczepinski.pbworks. com/FrontPage. The page will be made available for public viewing until Monday, May 11th. After that time, if you wish to see it, you must ask for member approval and an ID and password will be emailed to you.

ART NEWS
Regina High School has invited us to participate in the Third Annual Juried Elementary Art Show held on Wednesday, April 29th. This art show displays work from students in grades 4-7, and includes other area Catholic Schools. We were invited to enter four pieces per grade level, and the following students will be participating: Danielle Heffner, Morgan Oliver, Ethan Flowers, Nick Sweeney, Kata Lamb, Katie Killeen, Grace Rossi, Julia Armitage, Maeve Kolk, David Pecoraro, Kevin McMahon, Annie Lougheed, Nelly Bornhorst, Dominic Gideon, Michael Kowalski, and Noah Scalish. Congratulations! The opening reception will be held in the Regina High School cafeteria from 5:00-7:00 PM on April 29th, with an awards ceremony scheduled for 6:30 PM.

Congratulations!
Andrew Quetell has been selected to play for the prestigious Nike Selects Hockey program this summer. His team will represent the Mid-West United States and compete against the finest 11 year old hockey players in North America. Only 60 boys across the U.S. and Canada are invited, and Andrew is only one of two boys selected from Ohio. He will participate in 3 tournaments this summer (2 in Toronto, Ontario and 1 in Chicago).

Andrew is currently a Captain for the 1998 Cleveland Barons of the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League.

Lenten Retreat Activity
The residents at Cedarwood Plaza were extremely grateful for our Easter treat that was dropped off before break. They thought it was so nice that we thought of the people in the community. Thank you to our students and staff!

Sympathies

Family Lenten Prayer Service
Please join us for a family Lenten prayer service in Saint Ann Church TONIGHT, from 7:00-8:00 PM, sponsored by Saint Ann PTO and Parish. We will have a service focused on the image of the cross. Families who attend Saint Ann School have received a cross for the family to decorate, or to write intercessions on, prior to the service.  For families or individuals who would like to participate in the service, but do not have a child at Saint Ann School, crosses will be provided in the half hour prior to the service. We will have a procession of all attendees into the church, and lay the crosses and intercessions on the altar in the chapel. This will be a brief opportunity for families to pray together, and consider the mystery of the cross during this Lenten season. Please come and join us for this event, and spread the word to any others that might want to attend!

Fish Fry Friday
April 3rd is the next Fish Fry Friday at Saint Ann Parish. Join us from 6-8 PM in Powers Hall (School Cafeteria) for a fish dinner with trimmings. The cost is $7 for an adult plate (12 and up), $3.50 for a child plate (4-11) and free for 3 and under. This Parish and Community Event is sponsored by the Families with Young Children (FYC).

Lenten Retreat Activity
One of the activities for our Lenten All-school Retreat Day will involve a service project for a local nursing home. We are in need of small, individually-wrapped candy to complete the project. If anyone is able to contribute to this project, please send your contributions to school by Friday, April 3rd. Thank you!

First in Math
Recently, the teachers in grades 1-6 introduced a new program at Saint Ann School. First in Math is an online program aimed at helping students improve their math fluency. The “team” approach is a great way to get children excited about math. First In Math® offers content that supports the core curriculum and is tied into national and state standards. Students progress at their own pace, earning electronic “award stickers” for each level completed, and a record is kept of individual member and team progress. To involve parents and family, games can be played on any computer with Internet access, including at home. Students will advance at different rates, according to their individual skill levels, but ALL players should experience improvement in numerical fluency, and increased speed. Your child will receive a password to allow him/her to work on this new program at home. We all hope it will help our students to improve their math achievement.

Please disregard this notice, as the event will not be happening at this time. Due to the upcoming Young Audiences/Verb Ballet "Balloonetics" event, Family Science Night was cancelled for this year. More information on the Young Audiences sponsored event will follow in the next few weeks.

Family Lenten Prayer Service
Please join us for a family Lenten prayer service in Saint Ann Church on Thursday, April 2nd, from 7:00-8:00 PM, sponsored by Saint Ann PTO and Parish. We will have a service focused on the image of the cross. Families who attend Saint Ann School will receive one cross per family to decorate, or to write intercessions on, prior to the service. Some ideas and instructions will be provided with the cross.   For families or individuals who would like to participate in the service, but do not have a child at Saint Ann School, crosses will be provided in the half hour prior to the service. We will have a procession of all attendees into the church, and lay the crosses and intercessions on the altar in the chapel. This will be a brief opportunity for families to prayer together, and consider the mystery of the cross during this Lenten season. Please come and join us for this event, and spread the word to any others that might want to attend!

Please disregard this notice, as the event will not be happening at this time. Due to the upcoming Young Audiences/Verb Ballet "Balloonetics" event, Family Science Night was cancelled for this year. Junior High Bowling
Attention 7th and 8th graders: There is still time to join us for Cosmic Bowling at Solon Freeway Lanes on Friday, March 27th, from 7:00-9:00 PM. Please see the flyer posted on Edline. The cost is $15 and includes two hours of bowling, shoes, and snacks. Doodle 4 Google Contest
We’re happy to announce the six winners for our school’s Doodle 4 Google contest. These students’ works will compete in the national contest sponsored by Google: Ryan Alt (4A), Riley Keenan (5B), Brady Furlich (6B), Mac Hertz (6B), Suzie Peyrebrune (6B), and Madalyn Stefanak (6B). Their designs have been posted on Edline. We wish them luck!

Ice Show
There is no better way to celebrate the promise of spring than at the third annual Pavilion Skating Club Ice Show this weekend on March 28th and 29th!

This year's theme "Heights, Camera, Action" will find the skaters as "contestants" in a variety of reality and game shows -- as well as a few inventive commercials. Enjoy watching this extravaganza that features Saint Ann figure skaters Anna Kallmeyer, Maddie Reilly, Elle Warshawsky, and Grace Young.

The two hour show will be at the Cleveland Heights ice arena on Monticello Boulevard. On Saturday, March 28, there will be two shows -- a 1:00pm matinee, and a 7:00pm show. On Sunday, March 29, the show will conclude with a 1:00pm matinee. Tickets are available at the Cleveland Heights Community Center, and are $12 for adults and children twelve and over, and $10 for seniors and children under twelve.

Junior High Bowling
Saint Ann PTO is sponsoring a Junior High Cosmic Bowling Extravaganza for seventh and eighth graders at Solon Freeway Lanes on Friday, March 27th from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Beach Volleyball
Thank you to all the families who participated in the Saint Ann School Volleyball Night at the Q in February! Because of our large attendance and abundant enthusiasm, the AVP has donated volleyballs to the gym and is sending a check for $160 to the Saint Ann Athletic Association.

Malley’s Candy
Our Malley’s sale is up and running! All students received a Malley’s candy bar today to help promote the sale. Remember, 100% of proceeds will be used for technology replacement and upgrades. Depending on the success of our sale, we will earn between 33% and 50% of the sales. We would like to encourage parishioners to join us, so if your family would like to volunteer to take orders in the Joachim Room after Mass next week, please contact Stephanie Applegate as soon as possible (sapple@ameritech.net). Baseball/Softball Information

Spelling Bee Results
Congratulations to James Ryan who represented Saint Ann School in the district Spelling Bee! James did a great job, but missed an obscure Japanese word, tatami, which is a straw mat for sleeping! We are very proud of James and congratulate him on his efforts!

Doodle 4 Google
Students in 4-8 who have elected to participate in the Doodle 4 Google contest need to have their entries submitted to Ms. Lick by Monday, March 16th. Students may submit more than one design. The six winners from our school will be announced on Wednesday, March 18th. After the winning designs are submitted, we will be notified in May if any of our students’ designs will advance to the next level of competition. For more information on the contest, visit:

ADHD Summer Program
The Children’s Hospital at the Cleveland Clinic is sponsoring a seven-week intensive summer program for children with ADHD aged 6-11 as well as an adolescent program for ages 12-14. Thank you to all families who collected donations for the American Heart Association. Saint Ann School donations totaled $4,677.97 during the Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart activities. The following criteria were used to identify candidates eligible for admission:
(1) Candidates eligible for selection to the chapter shall have no lower than a B- in all academic classes, including Religion, as well as specials such as Art, Music, and PE.
(2) Students must obtain conduct and effort marks no lower than satisfactory (S) in all classes, including specials.
(3) Students must be in good standing behaviorally at Saint Ann School, receiving no more than 2 detentions/semester

Upon meeting the grade level, attendance, academic, and behavior standard requirements, candidates were then considered based on their service, leadership, citizenship, and character.

Students were required to complete applications detailing their accomplishments in the Five Standards of Excellence: Leadership, Service, Character, Citizenship, and Scholarship.

According to the guidelines of the organization, only a certain percentage of the student body is allowed to be selected for admission. For example, there might be 20 students who qualify academically, but only 12 may be chosen for the organization, due to the size of our student body.

Thank you to our Advisors, Ms. Kathleen Kane and Miss Shannon Szczepinski who worked many long hours to establish these worthwhile organizations for Saint Ann School.

Conferences
As we near the end of the 3rd Quarter of the school year, it is time again for Parent - Teacher Conferences. Conferences will be scheduled for those children struggling with some area of the curriculum or with behavior. If your child’s teacher feels that a conference is warranted, he or she will contact you to schedule a convenient time in the next two weeks. In turn, if you would like a conference with your child’s teacher, please feel free to contact him or her. We are looking forward to a strong finish to a great school year!

Welcome Mrs. Nemecek!
As most of you know, Mrs. Tooker, one of our 7th grade teachers, is due to have a baby any day. We welcome Mrs. Nemecek who will be replacing Mrs. Tooker through the end of the year. Mrs. Nemecek graduated from Notre Dame College in December with her certification in Science and Math for grades 4-9. Teaching is a second career for Mrs. Nemecek who spent seven years working as a school speech and hearing specialist. Her love of children led her to return to school to pursue her teaching degree. Her love of science led her to Saint Ann School. We are very happy to have her join our staff!

Basketball News
Congratulations to the 6th Grade Boys’ Basketball Team, the 2009 Saint Dominic Tournament Champions, who beat Saint Dominic School 30-12! This Saber team went undefeated in regular season play, averaging over 30 points per game…great job boys! All students in grades 4 through 8 who have signed up or would like to sign up for CYO track, please report to Gesu gymnasium on Monday, March 9th at 6:00 PM for practice and sign-ups. Practices will be Monday through Thursday 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM. Bring tennis shoes as practice will be indoors through March.

Malley’s Candy
Please check your child’s backpack today, as it should contain all the information related to the Malley’s Easter Candy fundraiser. PLEASE participate in this very easy and very beneficial FUNdraiser, as all proceeds will be used to maintain, update, and replace our school’s fleet of laptops. Because you can purchase everything online, we ask you to encourage your out-of-state family and friends to order their candy from Malley’s this year. We’d also like to encourage parishioners to join us, so if your family would like to volunteer to take orders in the Joachim Room after mass for the next two weeks, please contact Stephanie Applegate as soon as possible (sapple@ameritech.net). Important dates:
• Monday, March 23rd: Paper orders are due.
• Thursday, April 2nd: Pick-up will take place at school.
• Monday April 6th: Internet orders are due.

Fish Fry Fridays
March 20th and April 3rd are Fish Fry Fridays at Saint Ann Parish. Join us from 6-8 PM in Powers Hall (School Cafeteria) for a fish dinner with trimmings. The cost is $7 for an adult plate (12 and up), $3.50 for a child plate (4-11) and free for 3 and under. This Parish and Community Event is sponsored by the Families with Young Children (FYC).

ITBS/CogAT Testing
We have almost completed our first week of Standardized Testing at Saint Ann School. Using the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) and the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) our students are spending much of their time here at school demonstrating their mastery of academic skills.

Teachers have been working all year long to prepare students for these assessments. We feel that the students are ready and feeling much more comfortable about taking the tests. Parents: Your help is needed!

How can you help your child prepare? Follow the suggestions listed below:
• Ensure your child receives a good night’s sleep (at least eight hours).
• Ensure your child eats a healthy breakfast.
• Ensure your child has several #2 pencils.
• Ensure your child has a library book to read when he/she has completed each section of the test.
• Ensure your child knows that YOU think he/she will do well on the tests.

Star Players
Congratulations to Mark Mastroianni in grade 5 and Alex Hoyen in grade 4. Their hockey team won the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League playoffs in their division. The league includes teams from as far west as Elyria and as far south as Columbus and had a total of 28 teams at the Squirt level (9-11years). Their team played at the highest Squirt level, AA, and went on to defeat Geauga 3-2 in overtime on Sunday.

Service Opportunity at Fairmount Co-op Nursery School
The co-op could use some 6th – 8th graders to help with the first annual winter carnival on Friday March 13th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Fairmount Presbyterian Church on Scarborough and Coventry. We will be having carnival games and need help to run them and give out prizes (like Saint Ann School’s fall festival). Call Julie Pecoraro at 321-9596 if you can help or for more information. A Ticket to Washington, D.C.?
Eighth grader James Ryan will be participating in the Regional Scripps Spelling Contest to be held at Tri-C Metro Campus this Saturday. The winner proceeds to the National Spelling Bee Competition in Washington, D.C. Good luck, James!

Lenten Retreat Activity
One of the activities for our Lenten All-school Retreat Day will involve a service project for a local nursing home. We are in need of small, individually-wrapped candy to complete the project. If anyone is able to contribute to this project, please send your contributions to school by Friday, April 3rd. Thank you!
